Three short opinions from our lawyers on questions clients ask us most. General information, not legal advice for your situation.
A clean title is only half the search. The people living on the land may have rights the title does not show.
The cheapest part of any land purchase is the search you do before signing.

Purchasing land in Uganda—particularly within the vibrant Eastern region—requires rigorous, multi-layered due diligence. A certificate of title alone does not guarantee undisputed ownership. Buyers must verify the physical status of the land by conducting on-site boundary inspections accompanied by local LC1 officials and registered surveyors. Under the Land Act, lawful and bona fide occupants hold protected security of occupancy. At Stone Advocates, we conduct exhaustive title searches at Ministry Zonal Offices (MZOs), verify unregistered interests, and structure secure sale agreements to safeguard your investment.

The way you marry decides which law governs your marriage, and can make a real difference if the family later needs to prove it.
Proper contractual drafting at the outset prevents protracted litigation and ensures commercial stability.
Commercial agreements are only as effective as their enforcement clauses. Whether drafting outgrower agreements in agribusiness, shareholder arrangements, or supply contracts, businesses must incorporate explicit choice-of-law clauses, clear default remedies, and structured dispute resolution mechanisms (such as multi-tiered mediation and arbitration). Proper contractual drafting at the outset prevents protracted litigation and ensures commercial stability.

Objections to tax assessments have strict time limits. Miss them and an assessment can become final, however wrong it is.
The best time to prepare for a tax dispute is when you file the return.
Businesses often receive an additional assessment from the Uganda Revenue Authority after an audit, and set it aside while they gather documents. That delay can be costly: the Tax Procedures Code Act sets a deadline for lodging an objection, generally 45 days from the date the assessment is served.
An objection is lodged through the URA portal and should set out clearly why you disagree, supported by your records: invoices, contracts, bank statements and earlier returns.
If the objection decision goes against you, you can apply to the Tax Appeals Tribunal for review. Part of the disputed tax is usually payable before the Tribunal hears the case, so plan for that cash early.
